Community ‘devastated’ after death of schoolchild, 9, as tributes flood in for youngster

A community has been left devastated after the tragic death of a 9-year-old schoolgirl.

Residents of New Cumnock have come together in a show of respect following the news that a schoolgirl had been killed after being hit by a tractor while riding a bike.

Emergency services rushed to Castle Place around 12.35pm yesterday, but sadly, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP Allan Dorans led tributes last night as the politician sent his “thoughts and prayers,” to the girl’s loved ones.

MP Dorans said: “Saddened to hear the tragic news today from New Cumnock, where a young girl has lost her life in a road traffic incident.

“My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends and the close knit community of New Cumnock.”

Community groups ceased their planned activities as a mark of respect.

New Cumnock Development Trust, posted: “In light of the tragic event in our community today, all NCDT activities over the coming week are now cancelled.”

Glenafton Athletic also shared tributes and vowed to hold a minutes silence before their match with Irvine Meadow on Saturday.

New Cumnock Bowling Club also closed early last night.

The club said: “Due to the tragic event in our village today the green will be closed tonight in respect for the family.”

Meanwhile, education chiefs at East Ayrshire Council have vowed to support “those affected” by the tragic death of a schoolchild in New Cumnock.

Linda McAualy Griffiths, chief education officer, for East Ayrshire Council, said: “Our thoughts are with all involved at this very sad time.

“We will be working closely with the school and together we will do all we can to help and support those affected in the coming days.

“All enquiries relating to the incident itself are being handled by our colleagues in Police Scotland.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.35pm on Monday, September 18, we received a report of a crash involving a tractor towing a trailer and a 9-year-old female on her bicycle on Castle Place, New Cumnock.

“Emergency services attended but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
